SEO salary benchmarks, contract rates and what moves pay
SEO pay has no official wage category. It gives a marketing specialist benchmark, typical salary bands, contract day rates, and the scope factors that move pay.
What to take away
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists no occupation called SEO specialist. CareerOneStop puts the 2024 U.S. median for marketing specialists at $76,950.
- Typical U.S. SEO bands run from $48,000 to $65,000 at entry, $65,000 to $95,000 at mid, and $95,000 to $140,000 at senior level.
- Technical depth, migrations and international markets move SEO pay more than years served.
- A contract rate has to cover self-employment tax, software, insurance and weeks with no client.
- Ask what a posted range covers before you treat it as an offer.
Pick a benchmark and say what it is
An SEO salary varies by specialty because no agency publishes one.
CareerOneStop's marketing specialist table reports a 2024 U.S. median of $76,950, with wide gaps between states. State medians behind that figure typically run from about $55,000 in lower-wage states to about $105,000 in high-cost states, a gap of roughly $50,000.
Typical disclosed U.S. SEO postings in 2025 list $60,000 to $95,000 for specialist roles and $100,000 to $140,000 for senior or lead roles. Contract SEO day rates commonly run $400 to $800, depending on scope and market.
CareerOneStop notes the category may include search marketing, so treat it as a reference class, not an SEO pay scale.
Marketing Specialist Median Pay
$76,950 | 2024 U.S. median for marketing specialists
CareerOneStop | Source of the benchmark
Wide gaps | Pay varies significantly between states
Reference class | Not an official SEO pay scale
That distinction matters at the entry level. A marketing manager median is not an estimate for a content SEO writing meta descriptions. Match the duties in the posting to the duties in the benchmark before you quote either number.
What actually moves SEO pay
- Technical depth
- log-file analysis, JavaScript rendering, crawl budget work on large sites
- Migrations
- domain moves, replatforms and URL restructuring where a wrong redirect costs revenue
- International markets
- hreflang, regional content and currency or language variants
- Revenue ownership
- whether you answer for organic pipeline or only for rankings
- Employment type
- agency, in-house, consultancy or contract
- The full package
- base, bonus, equity, retirement, leave and health cover
Titles mislead here more than in most fields. One SEO manager runs a team and owns a roadmap. Another is the only specialist at a 40-person company and reports to a marketing lead. A senior specialist at a large platform may hold harder decisions than a manager elsewhere. Compare scope, autonomy and accountability before you compare titles.

Reading a 2027 posting
Start with official national and state wage data, then pull disclosed ranges from similar current roles. Record the source date and the location, because a 2023 band tells you little in 2027.
Ask two questions of any posted range. Does it cover several levels, and how does the company set placement inside it? A band that spans $70,000 to $140,000 is describing a career, not a job.
For contract work, typical U.S. SEO day rates run $400 to $800 for specialist work and $800 to $1,200 for lead or migration-heavy work.
The IRS explains self-employment tax as Social Security and Medicare tax mainly for people who work for themselves.
Add software, insurance, nonbillable admin and gaps between projects before you compare a day rate to a salary. Freelance SEO sits inside the wider set of freelance marketing careers, where pricing and delivery decide take-home pay.
Negotiating on scope, not on a salary page
Tie your request to the duties in the posting and to evidence you can show. If interviews reveal you would own migrations, a team, a budget or several markets, ask whether the level and range should change with them.
Ask when the company last refreshed its pay bands and how promotion affects them. Bring the SEO job requirements you already meet, because a hiring manager can act on those and cannot act on a national median.

Two checks on pay data and access
The NIST Privacy Framework starting guide describes a voluntary process for finding and managing privacy risk. The W3C explanation of information and relationships says visual structure should also be available to assistive technology. Neither sets pay, but both prompt a check on data claims and pay-table access.
Common questions
What is the average SEO salary?
Start with the $76,950 marketing specialist median. Then adjust for title, scope, location, industry and employment type. Say which adjustments you made.
Why do published SEO figures differ so much?
Sources mix countries, seniority, specialties and methods. Compare the sample size, the collection date and the role definition before you use a number in a negotiation.
Is a freelance SEO rate comparable to a salary?
Not directly. Contractors cover self-employment tax, software, insurance, nonbillable work and months without clients, so a day rate is not a daily wage.
Does a certification raise SEO pay?
It can open a first interview. Pay bands usually follow scope and evidence, so treat a certificate as a way in rather than a reason for a higher offer.
